| Where I met Team

18 months ago, i was
riding my first full suspension bike (specialized rockhopper fsr) and
came across a group of guys riding furiously on the trails, i wanted to
ride like that. i met my first smack team member Mr. bill my first ride
on my rockhopper when i tacoed my front tire. i know he had a great big
laugh over that |
| Why do I race: |
the comradry of being
with my friends, getting to meet and ride with great people, to improve
my cycling skills, and it is a blast. i had never competed in endurance
sports before. i love it and can't wait till the next one. |

Story: |
the comfort race in
the heart of the texas hill country in the spring of 2001 was the first
top ten finish i would have. i went up with bill, a friend from work jim,
and loren eventually met up with us that evening. the rest of team
westside was there also. this was my fourth race of the season, i was
slowly improving my finishes, the race before in austin, i finished
19th. i had set a goal of top 10in this race. we prerode on saturday,
lots of long climbs, rock gardens and fantastic descents. i made the
mistake of preriding both loops so i had horrible cramps that night. we
(beginners)were the first to race, pots and i stood next to each other
at the gun, i got a bad start, i could not get clipped in and had my
shin smashed by my pedal. the first 2 or 3 miles pots and myself were
moving up in the race, passing racers furiously. he and i approached the
major climb, and i never saw him again. that long climb was
unbelievable, it seemed to go on forever, i got 2/3 th! e way up and
tried to pass a racer, but my rear wheel washed out. @#%@ i cussed, a
friend behind me shouted ,"you looked good up until there
hood." the rest of the climb i pushed my rig up the hill. pushing a
bike up a hill is more taxing than riding. at the top were what seemed
miles of rock gardens. i again was passing racers, one after another. i
begin to think that i may have a good race. once the descending started,
i was passing a rival, patrick lopez i believe. i had beaten him by 2
seconds the last race. "you're lucky he shouted", i had passed
him once before, i later deducted he had cut the course. with about a
mile to go, i make a sharp right turn that the day before had given me a
little trouble, but i had made it, this time i got about half way
through it and used too much rear brake. my wheel washes out. i hit the
dirt, but am back on my bike quickly. i let a junior pass me. but no one
else. suddenly i start having shifting problems t! hen my chain comes
off. i dismount quickly and fix my pr! oblem. |
